The Best Value Holiday Destinations: Skyscanner Reveals The Holes In Our Preconceptions
The price comparison site Skyscanner has revealed that a great deal of Brits have
been getting it wrong in regards to distinguishing 'cheap' holiday destinations from their more expensive rivals. The website asked 1500 British consumers to list 30 destinations based on whether they believed them to be cheap or expensive, in the survey Norway, Switzerland, Sweden and Denmark were high on the list. Yet, while Switzerland and Denmark were high, France was top of the list.Brazil was also thought to be one of the cheaper destinations at position 11, yet is actually one of the more expensive spots, 21st priciest according to Skyscanner's research. Russia also surprised consumers, placed 5th in the most expensive destination list, 10 places higher than consumers had predicted.
Sweden and Norway were much lower than expected on the list of most expensive, coming in at 13th and 16th .
The Least Expensive: False Notions Dispelled
The respondents seemed to be closer to the mark when predicting the, yet there were a number of big lapses in judgment. Correctly, those asked had predicted India, Thailand and Morocco all to be inexpensive destinations, and all found themselves in the top ten cheapest. Yet Mexico which was believed fourth cheapest turned out to be the tenth most expensive destination.
The research suggested Cyprus to be the cheapest destination, with vacation rental villas in Cyprus offering a cheap alternative to hotels and much of the local produce available at price that won't break the budget. Greece, South Africa, Dominican Republic and Morocco completed the top 5 of the most cost effective holidays. The two cheapest (Cyprus and Greece), were both falsely predicted in the most expensive, placed at 14th and 17th in the list.
Cost of Getting There
Predictably with many long haul destination, the prices can tend to soar when costs of flights are factored in. Therefore flights are one of the most important things to consider when planning a holiday on the cheap.
New Zealand rises nearly over places in the most expensive list, flying from the low thirties in to the top ten. Thailand also becomes increasingly expensive plummeting eight places, from number six to fourteen in the cheapest destination list.
While destinations in Europe which offer cheap flying deals seem to benefit, as Sweden becomes much more budget friendly, falling from eighth most expensive to fifteenth.
These cheap flights serve to strengthen journeys to Cyprus and Greece as good budget holidays. Perfect destinations for those hit by this recession.
Director and co-founder of Skyscraper Barry Smith set up the survey and had this to say of its purpose and findings: We decided to undertake this research in response to consumer demand for greater price transparency on their trips abroad. Whilst the results are to some extent subjective, they do provide a broad guideline of total holiday cost.
Its extremely interesting to see how many destinations challenge common perceptions and Im more than a little surprised to see France, a destination only a stones throw away, emerge as the most expensive overall holiday.
