Virtually all of us have, at one time or another
, sent or received Christmas cards from a friend or family member. The mass produced Christmas card is the signaling of the start of the holiday season in the United States and also in many other nations as well. But have you ever thought about when Christmas card giving first started to be part of family traditions everywhere?Most of the history books will have information on this back to the eighteen hundreds in London, England. It started to be routine in the mid nineteeth century to send hand written greetings to family members and friends of the family. One Englishman decided that the list for him to send Christmas cards to was way to long for him to handle so he hired a helper to get the job done. In the process it evolved to having a small painting on the greetings to symbolize the special friendship or bond that he had with that person. Now there is a rumor that that a few of his scenes that were depicted, appeared to be a bunch of children drinking wine. The embarrassing result was that he cut down on the sending for the next year in fear of controversy. Now this was only a rumor and never substantiated but had to be mentioned as it was in the history books.
Up until the early twentieth century all Christmas cards were imported to the United States from England. There was a man named Louis Prang who is considered the father of the American Christmas card who featured snow scenes and burning fireplaces that give it that holiday feel. Most of the Christmas cards are well sought after by collectors and have been reproduced throughout the years.
The industry of producing Christmas cards soon became a regular part of the rotation of different cards for different holidays. The designs that were made reflected the historical times at hand. There were a lots of war depictions and themes that became very patriotic to most and were kept for sentimental reasons.
In the last few decades there have been a decline in the amount of Christmas cards that are sent out physically. This is the product of the changing technology and the instant communication of the Internet, telephone, and other technological advances at work. With the inception of the Internet there are many that opt to send a free e greeting or e card instead of the traditional Christmas cards which has created the downturn. Though in the past years the inception of the website has come along that will create, label and send your Christmas cards for you down to licking the envelope.
