The Benefits of Air Ambulance Insurance

The Benefits of Air Ambulance Insurance

Purchasing home, auto or health insurance is a security measure individuals undertake to protect themselves in the event of loss, accident or illness. When it comes to protecting oneself, many people are also turning to Air Ambulance Insurance; this type of insurance provides coverage in the event of a medical emergency which requires air ambulance transport.

Air ambulance transport has a long history, begun with military evacuations during World War I. By the time the 1950s rolled around, providers in the United States began using helicopters to transport injured individuals to quality care facilities. With the intrigue and allure of global travel whether for work or pleasure comes the potential need to be air lifted in the event of a medical emergency.

While it's likely you may never need air ambulance transport insurance, it's never a bad idea to be prepared if you are planning an out of the country vacation or even a vacation in a remote location of the United States. Think of it this way you hope you never have to call on your insurance agent and use your home or auto insurance, but you pay the premiums to keep yourself protected.

As with all insurance policies, coverage varies based on your premiums, the company you contract with and the type of insurance you choose. Under some policies, for example, it could cover all of the costs associated with transport by an air ambulance. Some policies may have varying deductibles and the policies may cover you if you within X number of miles from an airport or airstrip. Still other policies vary their premiums and coverage based on the type of aircraft you will need and the medical emergency you are experiencing.

Your policy could cover some, all or a portion of the following (this is by no means an exhaustive list of items that could be covered under an air ambulance transport policy):

Accompaniment of a family member with the patient

State of the art medical equipment

Supervision of your medical needs during transport (number and type of medical personnel)

Procurement and transportation of organs to a recipient

When you stop to think that transport on an air ambulance could cost tens to more than hundreds of thousands of out-of-pocket money, it only makes sense to research insurance options.

Owning an air ambulance insurance policy also brings with it something money cannot buy peace of mind. Consider this, if you have a child who is traveling overseas for a college term or graduation vacation, you would want to know that if he or she were injured, access to quality care in the United States could be made readily available. If you have purchased insurance, you would have the peace of mind that your child can be quickly and safely transported out from the foreign country and back home. Remember too though, that air ambulance transport can also be necessary within the United States if you are in a remote location.

As with any type of insurance, you need to research policies, coverages and exclusions. You can start your search for a policy with the insurance agent who handles your personal insurance packages. Make certain you also check with your health insurance provider (ie AIG, Aetna, MVP, Blue Cross/Blue Shield) as they may offer some coverage for urgent medical care; ask specifically if they cover air ambulance transport and if so, what the costs and exclusions are. Bear in mind that Medicare does not provide coverage for hospitalizations and medical care outside of the boundaries of the United States.

It is also possible to purchase air ambulance insurance for a specified period of time with no long term commitments. As always, it's better to be safe than sorry!
