UNESCO set the old Tunisian city of Sousse as a World Heritage Site to preserve its rich heritage

. It is one of the cities in the country that have an authentic medina (which refers to the old sections). In addition to the historical grounds, Sousse boasts of a turquoise sea and beautiful beaches.

Depending on where you are coming from, you can get to the city by plane, train, bus, car or boat. Within the city itself, you may get around by using a taxi (which may be shared), Mini-trains, Tuk-Tuk's or horse-drawn carriages, which will give you a unique kind of experience.

There are different things that you can see in Sousse, most of which are found in the medina area right at the center of the city.

The Traditional Tunisian House is a small museum located just within the walls of the old city about 200 yards to the north of the city's main bus terminal. It used to belong to a local Tunisian family but was converted into a museum when the last surviving member of the family passed away.

You can gain access to all the rooms from the courtyard, including the wives' and childrens' bedrooms. The rooms are furnished with pieces of antiques, including curtains that are more than 200 years old. There are also German clocks that were imported in the 1800's.

There is a tower that was formerly used for monitoring the stars for the observance of Ramadan. Nowadays, you can use it to have some great views of the rest of the city.

Another museum is the Mosaic Museum, which is located on the edge of the medina in an old Kasbah that seems to crumble gently.

If you think that the city center is full of noise as throngs of people go about their respective businesses, then visit the Great Mosque. You will be amazed by the tranquility that the old mosque affords. It was constructed in 850 AD in the Aghlabite style of architecture. It is a simple building that is almost entirely devoid of decorations apart from curved arches and some Arabic inscriptions. If you expect to find carpets inside the mosque, then you are mistaken. Instead, there are simple reed mats. Take note of how to dress if you want to explore the mosque. If you do not have appropriate clothing you can rent green wraps to cover yourself during the process.

Ribat is a fortified holy site that used to be the home of a special branch of Islamic warriors. Apart from exploring the site itself, you can climb to the watch tower to have some panoramic views of the medina.

There are several places where you can make your required purchases, which include the Medina itself and the Soula Centre. Since the prices at the Soula Centre are fixed, you can use the place to have a better idea of the prices before you go to the souks where you need to bargain for the best deals. The traders speak different languages, so you should not worry about language barriers.
