The Art of Disney's A Christmas Carol: A Review

The Art of Disney's A Christmas Carol / by Diana Landau (Disney Editions

, 2009) Hardcover, 156 p. ISBN 9781423121046

The Art of Disney's A Christmas Carol describes the making of the latest movie version of Charles Dickens' classic, directed by Robert Zemeckis. The CG (Computer Graphics) animation got off to a solid start on its first weekend (in November 2009). Instead of attendance dropping off 40-50% for the second weekend, as major new wide releases frequently do, A Christmas Carol's business dropped by only 26%. It appears that it will remain successful in future Christmases as well, although perhaps not in the original 3D.

Zemeckis wanted to stay as close to Dickens as possible. Drawing inspiration from the illustrations in the first edition, he and his team recreated the look and feel of London in the 1840s. He also wanted to provide a completely up-to-date movie experience for his audience.

Disney issued Landau's book as a companion to the movie. Landau takes readers behind the scenes to explain how the designers at ImageMovers Digital created such terrifying ghosts, and how they made the younger versions of Scrooge look like they were aging naturallyand look like Jim Carrey, who provided the voice. She shows how Zemeckis planned his camera angles and how hard he worked to fulfill his vision.

The illustrations in the book offer the sets (including the Big Ben clock tower, Scrooge's house, and the 1840s city-scape) and designs for the characters based on the actual appearance of the actors who gave them voice. Landau interviewed the director, the actors, the designers, and all of the creative people involved in making the movie in order to get their perspective on how they developed the characters and approached the performance capture.

Disney's version of A Christmas Carol is now available on DVD and will likely run on television for years to come. Anyone who enjoys the movie will enjoy The Art of Disney's A Christmas Carol and the insight it brings to how it was conceived and made.
