The 2010 Emergency Budget - Is It Time To Move To Australia?
On 22 June 2010, the Chancellor of the Exchequer for the Conservative-Liberal Democratic
coalition government detailed his financial plans for the foreseeable future in what he was calling his 'Emergency Budget'.As was expected, the Budget featured a whole host of cutback measures and offered next to no substantial benefits to the country's residents (whilst George Osborne raised the income tax threshold to 7,745 pounds, helping just short of 900,000 people save money each year, the savings equate to 14 pounds and 12 pence a month).
For instance, one of the most notable points of the Budget was that from 4 January 2011, the VAT rate will increase by 2.5% to 20%. Although retailers aren't legally bound to show this rise in prices in the goods that they offer to their customers, it's highly unlikely that the vast majority will allow for this increase in VAT to eat into their bottom line.
Further to this, it was also decided that as the state was accounting for just under 50% of the country's income - something which Mr Osborne referred to as being "completely unsustainable - decreases in public sector budgets of 25% will be apparent over the coming 48 months.
Although both health services and international aid were exempt from these budget cuts, education was included, something which has caused a massive uproar already.
Due to the fact that, going by this recent Budget, the UK is going to be somewhat of a tough place to live in financially over the coming years, it is accepted that a lot of people will start to look at the possibility of moving - even if only temporarily - to another country.
It has to be noted, though, that when looking at the United Kingdom as a place to live as a whole, it isn't a part of the world that is particularly poor and therefore for those people looking at moving abroad, a lot of the countries that they are looking at they will be doing so through rose-tinted glasses.
However, there are some countries that whilst seeming particularly fantastic at the moment given the UK's economy issues, are actually great places to immigrate to, with Australia more often than not leading the way.
Once a piece of land where unruly citizens from the UK were sent to has flourished into not only a part of the world that features some of the world's most liveable cities (Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Adelaide all featured in the top 10 of The Economist's 2010 World's Most Liveable Cities list), but one of the primary destinations on the globe where people immigrate to.
A fantastic climate, laid back way of life and arguably some of the most sociable and friendly people alive, the country that is nicknamed Down Under has seen over 500,000 people move to Australia in the past 5 years from the UK alone - and the 2010 Emergency Budget could be the perfect reason to make you become part of the hundreds of thousands of people who make the move each and every year.
