Kandy is among the most scenic and holy cities in the island nation of Sri Lanka

. As you enter this secluded city surrounded by green rolling hills, you will definitely get a sense of divine serenity.Sri Lankans give Kandy utmost veneration as it is the home to the Temple of the Tooth. The Temple of the Tooth houses a tooth of the Buddha said to have been obtained from the Buddhas funeral cremation in 543BC.This breathtakingly beautiful city in the hills of Kandy has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, mainly due to the Temple of the Tooth.

The tooth of the Buddha has been coveted by many throughout history. It is said that the tooth was secretly brought into Sri Lanka concealed in the tresses of a princess. From then onwards it has been considered as a symbol of power and the right to rule. Therefore, the tooth was kept in temples in close proximity to the Kings Palace itself. As the kings established their kingdoms throughout the country the tooth also took a journey from Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dambadeniya, and Yapahuwa to Kurunegala, and finally resting in Kandy.
Temple Of The Tooth A Divine Destination

The Temple of the Tooth that you will see in Kandy was built by King Vira Narendra Singha, although it was expanded by later kings and modern Presidents of the country. You will be treated to a delightful cultural experience once in the temple. It majestically stands bordered by the glistening Kandy Lake and the lush green Udawatta forest. The elegant wood and stone carvings found on pillars and the floor of the temple will give you a glimpse of the gifted craftsmanship of a time long past. The holy tooth is heavily guarded and is kept within a golden casket, which in turn contains six caskets of diminishing size and finally the tooth itself. You can view the golden casket only during certain hours of the day when offerings of prayers are conducted. However, the temple itself with its ancient frescos, exquisite works of art and grand Buddha statues emanates an aura of serene divinity. You will have to wear clothes that cover your legs and shoulders and remove your shoes which can be kept safely at a point near the entrance of the temple.
