Teenagers Have More Accidents Involving Passenger Vehicles And Heavy Trucks During The Summer Months

Motor Vehicle Accidents are the leading cause of death for teenagers

. Teenagers have more accidents during the summer months than other times of the year due to a number of reasons. One reason is that there is more time available for the myriad of summer activities. Also, there are often more teens in the car which means that there are numerous distractions for the driver such as passengers talking or the playing of loud music.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) motor vehicle accidents account for more than one in three deaths in U.S. teenagers ages 16 to 19. Eight teenagers ages 16 to 19 died every day from motor vehicle injuries in 2009. In the U.S. 3,000 teenagers aged 15-19 were killed and more than 350,000 were treated in emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor-vehicle accidents.

Any collision which involves a large truck and a passenger vehicle will be disastrous to the occupants of the passenger vehicle. There can be death or serious injuries to the head, neck and spinal cord to the occupants of the passenger vehicle. Occupants can also get lacerations, broken bones and bruised and damaged organs. Approximately 5,000 fatalities occur each year in accidents involving passenger vehicles and heavy trucks. In the majority of these accidents an estimated 98% of the victims of the victims are the occupants of the passenger vehicles.

Drivers Education Programs are marketed for safety and teach teenagers safe driving habits and the dangers of reckless driving. Sears Driving School has excellent driver training programs and specialized training programs geared to teenagers. However, regardless of how good a driver training program is there will always be incidents in which teenagers totally disregard their training. Some will always be impatient, inattentive, and outright reckless in their driving. Unfortunately, these teenagers if involved in an accident with a heavy truck will in most cases be killed outright or bear the brunt of the injuries. Trucking Mentors instruct teenagers on how to drive safely around heavy trucks. This program was developed by Trucker Buddy. Teenagers often try to pass trucks in an unsafe manner. One major problem teenage drivers have is being unaware of the dangers of blind spots on trucks. If passenger vehicle drivers would stay out of the blind spots there would be fewer accidents involving heavy trucks. There are four blind spots or no zones surrounding a tractor/trailer. The driver of the truck cannot see objects from the drivers seat in these blind spots. Trucking Mentors recommend that drivers pass trucks on the left. A good rule of thumb for drivers to know when driving near tractor/trailers is if you cant see both mirrors on the truck the right one and the left one from behind the truck be aware that the driver of the truck cant see you.

Once teenagers receive their drivers license they know how to drive and they also know the rules of the road. The issue is whether teenagers actually follow the rules and adhere to the training they received. If they choose to ignore it or make reckless decisions it will often lead to their demise. Parents should make sure that their teenagers know how important it is to share the road safely with all types of vehicles. These parents can then have peace of mind knowing that their teenagers will be safe, courteous drivers.
