Taking Your Child For Their First Hair Styling

Taking Your Child For Their First Hair Styling

Remember when your child was little and you cut their hair for the first time

? Most parents keep a lock of hair from their child's first haircut and have it tied with a ribbon. That baby-fine baby hair is a quick way to have a sentimental trip into your child's babyhood! Soon your child will need to have more regular haircuts, and that means finding a salon that has some experts at working with young children.

The Horror if Haircuts

There are lots of stories out there, if you search, about horrors that happen when parents bring children in for hair styling. This, however, doesn't have to be the case! Many times the frustration and screaming comes from having children who aren't prepared for a hair styling and from selecting a stylist who isn't used to working with children. There are a number of things that you can do to help your child to go from being scared of the salon to enjoying getting their hair styled!

Before you have your child go to a hair stylist, make sure that you have selected someone who knows how to work with children. Don't be afraid to ask the stylist how many children they work with during an average week and ask to see their portfolio. There should be some photos of children in the portfolio that the stylist has worked on. Taking Your Child For Their First Hair Styling

Once you've selected a stylist that you're comfortable with, go in for a hair styling yourself and bring your child with you. Part of the fear when it comes to getting a hair cut is the fact that the children believe that getting their hair cut hurts. It's fairly logical when you think about it - they know that scissors are bad from what their parents tell them, and they know if their hair gets pulled on it hurts, so why wouldn't it hurt to get a haircut? Bring them with you to a styling by the same hair stylist and have them watch as you get your hair cut. Make sure you talk to them throughout the cutting, explaining what the stylist is doing, in terms that they can understand, and how it is fun to have done!

Try to have your child set up for an appointment immediately following your cut so that they can take their turn up in the chair. Many salons have booster seats they use in the chair, and children have fun sitting in them. Even if they're not scared, it's still hard for a young child to sit still, so be prepared to play with them while they're in the chair, such as having them play with one of the stylist's combs or the water bottle that they use to wet hair down. After they're done, and if they've done well, make sure that there's some sort of treat there for them, such as a lollipop, so that they know that they did good. Create a good relationship with your hair stylist and your child will never have a fear of getting their hair cut!
