Taking A Great Family Holiday Photo

As the holiday season approaches, many families will be sending out family photos and holiday greetings

. One of the top concerns about these cards is the quality of the photo that is sent.

A lot of hard work goes into capturing the perfect family holiday photo. You must coordinate outfits, get children to cooperate, deal with timelines and pressure.

There are several other things you should also think about if you are taking a holiday photo of your friend's family or if you are simply trying to get a picture of your children. Remember this photo is going to be sent to extended family and friends, so it must be perfect.

The first thing you should think about is the outfits. The outfits should be coordinated, but they should not match.

If the outfits all match, the attention will be drawn to the outfits instead of to the people in the photo. When the outfits are coordinated, but do not match, attention can be drawn to each person in the photo.

Outfits should be the same in level of being dressed up. For example, you do not want a daughter in a formal and a son in a t-shirt and ripped jeans.

Try to choose a basic color scheme but mix it up and allot different people to wear different textures. This will add much more to the photo and make it a lot more interesting.

In addition you should choose clothing that avoids big logos and patterns. These things are distracting and will draw the attention to them, instead of the person.

Logos and patterns are designed to draw attention. Make sure the outfits match within themselves as well.

Another mistake some people make is wearing too much makeup. Makeup is for celebrities and those on the stage.

A family photo is more relaxed and closer than a camera shooting a celebrity. Too much make up can ruin a photo by becoming the center of attention.

Instead, wear simple makeup and then touch up the photo with a photo editing program afterwards if necessary. If you have questions about whether you are wearing too much makeup, ask your family.

Be sure to let your children have a say in the photo as well. This can make it a fun experience for them rather than a boring one in which they simply are expected to obey.

Let them help pick out what to wear and let them pick a family pose. You do not want your photo to be simply strict.

You want some personality to shine through for each person. By allowing your children to become involved you will be able to see their personality in their clothing or in the set up.

It may also help as incentive to be happy that day to plan something fun after the photo session. You can use this fun activity as leverage to get your children to sit still or smile.

Another thing that will make a huge difference as to whether your family portrait turns out correctly or not is whether you can find the right photographer or not. Finding the right photographer to work with your family can make a huge difference in how the photos turn out.

If you have children, make sure that the photographer you choose has experience working with children. In addition, every photographer has a different style, so try to find one with a style that you like.

It is also a good idea to find a photographer with who you are not afraid to give suggestions or talk about what you envision. Most photographers will listen, try it out and then modify your suggestions to make them even better.

Another thing you will need to think about carefully is the setting in which you want the photos taken. A studio gives a very formal and serious setting in which to take your photos.

It is generally best to choose somewhere outdoors for your setting. This will add life and a sense of a snapshot of real life to the photo.

Of course you do not want the setting to be so busy that it distracts from the people either. The lighting that you use is also critical to how the picture turns out.

Shade or overcast skies generally provide the best lighting for taking photos when you are outdoors. Direct sunlight is often too harsh to result in a good picture.

After you have decided on all of this smile, relax, and try to take a step back and judge the picture from the perspective of another. Sometimes the most perfect picture is not the best.
