Christmas Stockings a Family Tradition
Starting with the first Christmas of my first born child we have always made a stocking for each member of our family. This is a Christmas ritual that is shared by many people. Stamping your individual personality on the stocking makes it a treasured Christmas artifact.
To create something that is uniquely you does not require artistic skills. There are many ways around this. It is possible to start by buying one of the many plain Christmas stockings that are on the market and adding your own touches to it. Alternately you can start from scratch and pick your own colors, fabric, and trims. This will make the stocking you make reflect your interests and taste. It will compliment the other Christmas decorations you use to adorn your home.
If you decide to buy a pre-made plain Christmas stocking you can add your design simply by writing your name across the top of it. There are glitter no drip glue pens available for this. They come in a rainbow of colors and you can add a few swirls to dress it up.
With craft glue you can add either your name or a design then sprinkle on some glittering sprinkles or fake jewels. This method will take a couple of days for it to dry so lie it flat in a safe place.
On the lower part of the stocking you can really personalize it with more glue and glitter, drawing directly on it, or add appliqus or a combination of both. Certain fabrics like muslin work best to draw upon. To do this effectively you need to place a piece of cardboard in the stocking. This gives you a hard surface to press upon and prevents the colors from bleeding into the back side of the stocking. .
Our choice of fabric for our family stocking is felt in red, green or white. We have one pattern so everyone's stocking is the same size. We print out letters from the computer for the name, then cut them out from a contrasting color of felt, and then sew the letters on to the stocking. We cut out designs such as stars, Christmas trees, and bells that we sew on the stockings. We also try to add something personal to each person on the stockings.
There are lovely quilted stockings that you can make. These can be fashioned by either buying quilted material or by sewing quilt squares to a muslin stocking. If you have a particular interest you can cut your quilt square into shapes and attach them. If sewing is not your thing these can also be affixed by an iron on application. Or use transfer patterns that you iron them on and then trace around the design with fabric paint.
If this just seems like too much work then there are many sources where you can purchase pre-made Christmas stockings. A great place to find beautiful Christmas stockings is at the local craft fairs in your neighborhood. Some of the quilters and some of the needlework stockings are outstanding. Many of these are designed so you can add your names.
Christmas stockings are a lasting addition to everyone's holiday celebration.
