Take your own tour of Tenerife

With its warm temperatures and idyllic scenery, Tenerife has been a popular holiday destination for generations, but that doesn't mean you have to follow the crowd when booking your Tenerife holidays. There's a lot more to this large and impressive island than just beaches and holiday resorts, and hiring a car during your stay could be the most convenient and cost-effective way to travel the length and breadth of the largest of the Spanish Canary Islands.

Tenerife offers more than just sea views when you head to the interior, where you'll find geological marvels such as El Teide - one of the largest volcanoes in the world and the highest point in all of Spain. This World Heritage Site is well worth a day trip on your Tenerife break, and easily reached by car. As well as being incredibly photogenic itself, the mountain is also a great place to watch the sun rise and set, or to enjoy remarkable clear views of the starry night sky.

It's not just the natural wonders of Tenerife that make it such an attractive and charming island though, as the traditional towns dotted around the coast also make for great road trip scenery. The town of Tenerife itself is the best place to find restaurants and souvenirs of your trip, but you can get away from the crowds by heading off the beaten track to the old fishing town of Garachico. If you're planning on arranging Tenerife car rental to explore the island at your leisure, there are a number of things you'll need to consider, to ensure your holiday plans go without a hitch. Things might be a little easier if you've driven in Spain before, either on the islands or the mainland, but even if the country's driving laws are new to you, they shouldn't take too long to pick up.

As well as remembering to drive on the right, there are a number of road signs you should become familiar with, such as the instruction to give way. You should also remember that alcohol limits for drivers are a lot less than in the UK, and if you drink more than a pint of beer or single glass of wine you could be considered over the limit if stopped by authorities. Some Tenerife locals can be infamously lax in their attitude to driving safety, but you should be safe as long as you keep your wits about you and your eyes on the road.
