Thanks to the recession, many more families in the UK are taking holidays at home than in the boom years. But while the rising popularity of these so-called 'staycations' may have been borne out of compromise, people are quickly realising that the country's many excellent destinations offer just as much fun as those abroad - provided the weather holds up. So if you're planning a summer holiday in the UK this year, what exactly can you choose from?
To begin with, there are plenty of beach holiday destinations in the UK. And though the summer weather might not always be appropriate for sunbathing, there's plenty of fun to be had for families, couples and groups of friends alike. At Blackpool, for example, the seaside and Pleasure Beach attractions will keep children entertained for hours, while its bars and clubs will appeal to twentysomethings in search of a hedonistic holiday.
Further south, destinations like Brighton, Bournemouth, the Isle of Wight and various locations in Cornwall and Devon offer reliably better weather, as well as impressive local beaches. However, seaside holidays don't always have to be about fun on the beach. Scotland's beaches - such as St Andrews' West Sands or Edinburgh's Cramond - might not be suitable for extended lounging but they certainly provide spectacular scenery.
Rural countryside breaks in Britain are also just as beautiful - if not more so - than similar holidays to be had in France or Italy. Indeed, the UK's wealth of national parks are home to some of the most breathtaking rural landscapes found anywhere in Europe. In England, highlights include the North Yorkshire Moors, the romantic Lake District and The Broads in Norfolk and Suffolk, which is not a national park but is similarly protected. For more awe-striking mountainous scenery, head to Snowdonia in Wales or the Grampian Mountains in Scotland where you'll find Ben Nevis, the UK's highest peak. Northern Ireland's Giant's Causeway is also a unique sight that must be visited at least once in a lifetime.
Another option for UK summer breaks is a luxury holiday. This style of holiday is particularly popular with couples of all ages who are seeking a romantic break without having to leave the country. Luxury retreats can be found across the UK, in the middle of the city and tucked away in secluded countryside areas. Rural luxury destinations are usually housed in renovated stately homes and occasionally in a refurbished castle, so the feeling of modern indulgence is often combined with a tangible sense of the UK's illustrious history. Moreover, these destinations often house a spa and an excellent restaurant, and can be the perfect summer treat if you simply want a relaxing, extended break from your daily routine.
