Symptoms Of A Faulty Automobile Thermostat

Symptoms Of A Faulty Automobile Thermostat

There are a few simple things that may indicate that a cars auto thermostat is faulty.

Many times you may notice something as simple as a brief smell of sulphur. The sulphur smell is about the same as the smell from striking a match and immediately blowing it out. The smell usually is not as strong as that of the match, but its enough to make you aware of an odd odor.

Other times you may see your windshield fogging up, especially at the bottom edge, on the inside of the windshield. This can also indicate other problems in the heating and air conditioning system.

A stuck auto thermostat is the easiest and least expensive to repair.

A more obvious indication of a auto thermostat problem is when youve been running the heater, its nice and cozy in the vehicle and suddenly the heater fan starts blowing cold air.

The first thing to check, is to make sure there is sufficient coolant in the system. If the coolant level is full , then it is probably the auto thermostat.

The most typical thing that happens to a auto thermostat is that it sticks. You can manage with this for a bit, but it is one of the first indications of a problem and should be replaced as soon as possible.

If your engine seems to be taking longer to warm up, it could be the fault of a bad auto thermostat.

In an engine that is running hot, check the temperature of the top radiator hose by actually touching it. If the hose feels cool, it means the coolant is not flowing through this hose, and the auto thermostat is probably stuck open. When the auto thermostat is stuck, it prevents the coolant from flowing and cooling the engine.

If the top hose was warm, then the coolant is circulating and that eliminates the auto thermostat from being at fault.
