Subsidence is where the ground changes shape below, often causing chasms or voids under buildings. It can also result in sinkholes, which can swallow spaces of ground including buildings. It can also be caused by leaking drains, soaking water into normally dry ground that wouldn't usually be so water logged. Companies have warned that soaring temperatures could affect the foundations of your property, especially in areas where there is a lot of clay based soil. London, Colchester, Milton Keynes and Peterborough are specifically at risk, as they have the highest concentration of clay based soil in the country. Subsidence repairs cost more than seven thousand pounds to the UK homeowner on average, and if your home is build before the 1960's then it is more at risk then more recent builds. Last year, over twenty eight thousand claims were submitted due to subsidence, costing insurance companies over one hundred and thirty seven million pounds.
