Summer Fishing Strategies Part 2

Summer Fishing Strategies Part 2

As we discussed in part one of the Summer Fishing Strategies series, success for catching fish in the sunny season requires a different strategy than success in the fall. For example, pier fishing in California during the summer comes along with different obstacles as the piers and beaches become more crowded, scaring fish away.

In part two of this series we will give you three more tips to follow for the remainder of your summer fishing adventures.

Light Tackle and Good Bait: Take advantage of the calm summer surf and lighten up on your tackle. If fishing with bait is your forte, scale down your bottom rigs with light wire hooks in the #4 to #6 size range. Even with small hooks, use a long shank to make it easier to unhook the fish. Using a round or flat weight will allow your rig to move slightly with the current and cover more territory. Small bits of bloodworm, shrimp, or squid are good summer baits. Make Your Bait Last: Another necessary summer method is prolonging your bait. In the summer heat your bait will dry out in a very short period of time. To insure the longevity of your bait use a bucket, umbrella, and leave the bait in plastic wrap. There is no need for a huge bucket, just something big enough to keep a few mackerel in. Once you get to your location, fill the bucket a third of the way up with water and immediately place any mackerel, squid or eel bait you have straight into it. The reason you only fill it a third is so any jumper or coat you are wearing does not get wet. The second useful tool for prolonging your bait is the umbrella. Not only does an umbrella keep you out from the blazing summer heat, but it also keeps the bait out of the sun. It will not stop the bait from drying up altogether but will slow the process down enough to protect it for a few hours. The downside or difficult side of using an umbrella is the wind may become more of a struggle since you're on the coast. The last option would be to wrap your bait in plastic wrap and leave it in the shade; the moisture from the bait will help keep it from drying out.

Ask and You Shall Receive: Lastly, if you're on a fishing vacation for a short time, pay a visit to a fishing shop when you get there. The locals always know the latest fishing scoop and will point you in the right direction (should they take a liking to you.) Take their recommendations on where to fish and what bait to use, and your chances for summertime success will increase.

To conclude the Summer Fishing Strategies series, we have discussed five essential strategies for increasing your catch in the summer heat. You learned it was best to fish at early hours, search for signs of bites, use a light tackle, how to prolong your bait and to ask local anglers for advice (as long as they like you). Be mindful of these approaches and your summer catch will be a success!
