Summer Catfish Techniques
Summertime fishing for members of the catfish family is one of the most popular forms of freshwater fishing
. Most species of catfish develop a fairly consistent summer pattern that is disrupted only by extended periods of rainy weather or drastic changes in water level.Species such as channel cats, blue catfish and bullheads are all very active during the summer months. Depending on species and location, anglers fish with lures, live baits or "stink baits" to entice fish.
Catfish anglers often fish among dense vegetation in summer such as overhanging tree limbs or brush which borders productive areas. In small ponds and slow moving creeks dense vegetation along the banks is a very common occurrence.
During the low light periods of early morning or late day, catfish can even be caught in shallow areas. During these times, most species of catfish forage near submerged structures such as fallen trees, stumps or other cover, feeding on insects, crayfish and other small prey.
During mid-day fishing, catfish may move into deeper water or settle into hiding among rocks, eddies and around underwater obstructions. Live baits including small minnows, grubs or nightcrawlers are often productive for tempting these deep sulking fish. Live baits can be fished under a bobber or free lined, while paying close attention to line tension. Similar rigs are used to fish cut baits such as chicken livers, cut fish, or other odor-rich offerings.
These summer tactics work in most small and slow moving bodies of water such as creeks, canals and minor rivers. Until fall arrives, fishing in these areas is consistent and action-filled.
