Prevent lice, bites, stings and more.Camp always was a fun way to spend the summer

, but with so many kids running around without shoes or bug spray on, there's no way your child is coming home scathe free. Here's a list of 7 common ailments contracted at summer camp and how to prevent/cure them.1. Head LiceHead lice are about 3 mm long and have 6 legs. Nits are the eggs and are whitish in colour. Once they have reached their developmental stage they turn brown. Lice are spread from head to head contact. Regular head checks are a good way to avoid a larger problem as is keeping your community informed. There are also special shampoos that help to act as a preventative.2. Swimmer's EarFinally a reason other then not getting your hair wet to avoid dunking during a mandatory swim. This infection causes an itchy discharge from your ear, and is the result of swimming under water and then laying out in the sun. If possible, try to keep your ears dry; otherwise it might be worth wearing plugs.3. Food PoisoningThis horrible sickness is usually contracted from eating foods contaminated with germs. Germs come from poor refrigeration or ingredients that aren't fresh and can cause stomachaches, vomiting, and diarrhea. Drinking lots of water is critical. Go ahead and add electrolytes if necessary.4. Insect Bites and StingsThe saliva of the insect most often causes bites and stings. The clusters of red, itchy lumps can usually be settled with a cold compress and calamine lotion, otherwise an antihistamine should do the trick.5. Pink EyeMore formally known as conjunctivitis, pink eye is an inflammation of the outermost layer of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. It is usually the result of an allergic reaction or an infection (viral or bacterial). Most cases of conjunctivitis will clear themselves up with 2-5 days, otherwise antibiotics can be prescribed.6. Athlete's FootThis is a fungal infection of the skin that is typically contracted in moist areas where people walk barefoot such as locker room showers. The infection initially affects the foot but can spread to other parts of the body, and can be avoided through good general hygiene.7. Poison IvyThese three-pointed leaflets grow as vines and coil around trees or crawl along the ground. Their colour changes from a red in the spring, to green in the summer, and an orange in the autumn. Try grinding oatmeal together with cold water to create a paste and then apply it directly to the rash.
