Understanding Their Role in Your Investments

Many people think of the stock market as something mysterious and complex that's better left to experts in thousand dollar suits. If you have invested some money in the stock market in order to make it grow faster and stronger for your own future wealth, you've already noticed that it is much more successful than high yield savings accounts and certificates of deposit at earning significant returns at a much faster pace. But do you really know what stock traders do and how they're able to earn you money on your money? Here are some insights into the world of the Wall Street trader that you might find interesting.

If you've ever listened to a news program on the television or radio, it's likely that you've heard them talk about stock trading or the amount of stock that was traded on the market today. And while you might know that it's better for the market to have closed up rather than down, you're probably unsure of the processes that allowed it to do so. Stock traders, also referred to as stock brokers or dealers, are the people responsible for buying and selling stocks on the open market. Although we use the word trade, make no mistake about the fact that money is definitely changing hands on every transaction.

When the stock market first got started hundreds of years ago, most of the trades or purchases were made in person in open air markets. Usually attended by only the wealthiest merchants and bankers of the day, this was usually a selective crowd and all records were kept on paper. As the times and technology have progressed, the stock market has had to find a way to answer the needs of millions of different traders and thousands of public companies. For that reason, stock traders today can make their transactions in one of two ways: on the exchange floor, or electronically.

Stock traders that work directly on the exchange floor are the ones that you've seen in television clips, shouting and waving bits of paper at other traders who are shouting and waving. The stock exchange floor is a crowded, chaotic place, but the traders working there are usually comfortable with the noise and mess. They are able to find other traders looking for the stocks they're willing to buy or sell, and they communicate with signals and buzzwords to make the trade. Even when you purchase stock electronically, a similar match between traders must be made.
