Clare Valley has been called the jewel of the vineyard country
, as it is nestled in all its splendour in the midst of gentle rolling hills in the sunny south Australia. From this place sprang forth one of the world's most famous wines -- Australian Riesling Wine. Apparently, this particular wine region accounts for over 2% of the nation's crush produce. There is a staggering amount of wine produced in this part of Australia. There are 60+ wine regions and everyone is different. As is the climate and soil -- so is the wine bouquet, texture and taste. Historical architecture aficionados will just love a visit to the famous Auburn St Vincent Street area which is at the head of a glorious trail stretching for 25 km. This pathway is called not surprisingly the Riesling Trail and is a very scenic pathway meandering through the very heart of the valley. The views over Water vale and the surrounding vineyards is spectacular. In the very centre of all this is a lovely old sandstone cottage dating back to the 1920s which has been lovingly renovated.
In the area which fringes on the valley, is the outback. It is called big sky country. Magnificently sparse and stretching on forever, dotted with small homesteads. Having said that on the coast line you will find the Discovery Trail at Middle Beach, which is the living quarters for thousands of shorebirds. This area has been designated a special conservation zone by the National World Wildlife Fund. When you visit you will see precisely why this was deemed necessary.
Many nature lovers come to this area and are delighted to see- as well as unusual flora and fauna, birds and animals of all kinds. There is Kangaroo, dozens of different species of birds, frogs and much more.It is very scenic and perfect place to relax and have a barbie or a picnic. Nearby there is a wonderful spot called Spring Gully Park consisting of more than 400 hectares of grass and woodland home to acres upon acres of vividly coloured native orchids.
Many entrepreneurs and creative geniuses have come to this place, and purchased over time, many of the old derelict homesteads dotted around the area. From these old buildings they have created comfortable state of the art accommodation for its many visitors. The tourism industry in this region contains many of these kind of properties and a fair few excellent hotels to boot.
Not too far away, it's the cosmopolitan city of Adelaide. This is a place that boasts well preserved European style architecture as well as ultra modern style buildings. If you enjoy shopping till you drop this city is a tourist's heaven. A trip out would be well worth the time. At the very crux of Adelaide is the splendid Rundle Mall, a very interesting complex of shops. Surrounding the area are beautiful park lands. Near the railway station and casino are the Japanese gardens. Don't forget your camera. The accommodation just like the wine of the area is top class as you would expect. Although Adelaide is a large city it has a small town friendly relaxed feel about it. If you like to eat out there are many fine eating houses providing all kinds of ethnic foods.
