Sticking to Your Skincare Regimen is Essential During the Summer
According to the American Cancer Society, every year there are two million people in the United States on average diagnosed with some form of skin cancer. To put that number into perspective, the American Cancer Society also estimates that on average in the United States this year there will be nearly 210,000 new cases of breast cancer and 223,000 new cases of lung cancer reported. Needless to say, skin cancer should not be taken lightly.
The sad fact is that way too many people are being diagnosed with a disease that is preventable in most cases.
Summer is the season in the United States when people like to soak up the sunshine after a long winter and mild Spring by getting outdoors. Whether it is to the pool or the beach, or it is playing some form of sport, or just enjoying nature through camping, fishing or hiking, people take advantage of the longer days. Unfortunately, that means more sun exposure and for many, it means sunburns or at the least, premature damage to the skin that won't be seen for many years, and yet, is lingering under the surface.
Because of the increase in exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays that happens with a summertime lifestyle, it is imperative that people establish a good skincare routine that at the bare minimum includes the use of sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. If applied appropriately (meaning 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied after being in the water) sunscreen or sunblock will keep a person's skin from being burned.
It is one thing to know this to be true and another thing to actually apply sunscreen every time you go outside. For many of us, the best way to ensure the safety of our skin is to stick to a skincare regimen that includes a moisturizer that comes with SPF coverage already. This way, we do not forget the initial application of sunscreen in the morning before we go out into the sunshine.
The song goes, "Summertime and the living is easy." If you have ever had to treat a sunburn, you know just how not easy living can become. The pain of a sunburn can be mild to unbearable but it can be treated through a variety of methods. Personally, I would choose a natural based treatment plan for my sunburn before other methods. There are just too many good organic medicines out there. My personal favorites are aloe vera and emu oil for their deep penetrating cooling qualities (I actually found a topical cream at WalMart called Blue-Emu that has both lucky me).
Of course, any pain of a sunburn can be prevented all together if you remember to use sunscreen and cover yourself from unwanted sun exposure.
