Stay Safe at the Beach This Summer

It wouldn't be a summer holiday without a trip to the beach for some sun, sea, sand and relaxation. But there are times when lying on the beach may be more dangerous than it can seem, with the threat of sun burn, sun stroke and theft stopping never far away. But if you want to know how to stop these things from happening, here are some ways you can keep yourself, your family and your belongings safe while you sunbathe.

Wear Sunscreen

If someone ever tells you to go out in the sun with no sun protection, then don't listen. If you do this your run the risk of getting very badly sunburnt, which is not only very painful in short term, but it could also lead to your skin becoming damaged in the long term. Wear a high facto sunscreen, such as SPF 30 or SPF 50, wear sunglasses, and try to keep vulnerable areas of skin, such as the back of your neck and the tops of your feet covered to prevent them getting burnt. While many sunscreens may claim to be water resistant, make sure you reapply sunscreen after you or your family have been in the water.

Drink More

When it comes to staying hydrated on holiday, the key is to stick to bottled water, as it will hydrate you the most. Alcohol and carbonated drinks will only dehydrate you, and if the weather is particularly hot, this combination can be very dangerous, if not even fatal. To avoid becoming dehydrated make sure you drink plenty of water, and keep in the shade wherever possible.

Know Where your Valuables Are

Thousands of thefts are reported by holidaymakers every year, and if you don't want to become another statistic it's important to be aware of where your belongings are at all times. Keep your bag, phone, purse and passport safe, so don't try to carry them all in the same bag at once. Many hotels have a safe that quests are permitted to use, so put what you don't need every day in there. Make sure you keep a firm grip on your bag when you're out and about and remember to get travel insurance if the worst should happen whilst you're on your beach holiday.
