The Pantheon is well worth a visit, but in this area of Old Rome there are so many relics and well preserved monuments that you will be spoilt for choice.
Set within Rome but a tiny City in its own right is the Vatican City, which is the worlds smallest state. As you enter the Vatican City you will see the Swiss Papal Guards in their vivid clothing providing a security force stationed at the entrances which is both colourful and effective. Once iside, there is an unparalleled array of art work and architecture. Not least is the unrivalled mastery of the Sistine chapel which is possibly Michaelangelos greatest work and all the more amazing when you think that it took him a mere four years to complete, much of it lying on his back. Today people still gaze up in amazement at the vibrant colours and masterful execution. To see the pope himself, you can attend the Sunday blessing from his balcony, but for a better view ask your Rome hotel to book you a ticket for his Wednesday appearance when the pope will arrive to give his blessing either from a balcony or in the auditorium. The tickets are free but if you get one yourself you will find that you need to queue at St Peters and this is usually a very long wait.
While staying at a Rome hotel there are a multitude of things to do when you tire of seeing the sights. Dining out is excellent, as there are so many fine restaurants in Rome. Shopping in this style centre is brilliant and it is a great idea to shop for your designer outfits and then sit and have a coffee in one of the many little coffee shops, as Italian coffee is arguably the best in the world.
