Stasis Dermatitis is skin eczema that is found on the lower legs

Stasis is a term that relates to leg swelling seen in conditions of poor circulation and fluid buildup. It is skin irritation and that happens due to fluid accumulating below the skin.

In the US, stasis dermatitis occurs in 6-7% of people above 50 years of age. The risk of developing stasis dermatitis increases with age. Women are somewhat more likely to be affected, maybe due to the effect of pregnancy on the leg vein system. Signs and Symptoms of stasis dermatitis

Itching and red, dry areas are usually seen first when statis dermatitis happens. The inside part of the ankle is affected first, then moves to the lower leg area all the way to the knee. The skin does appear shiny or looks like it is having reddish brown patches.

Though edema is present, there is gradual tightening and scarring of the skin that lead to tender and hardness of the skin. In some cases, the skin can break down leading to crusting, oozing and ulceration.

Medications to control heart failure

Diuretics to remove excess fluid

Circulation in the area may get better as swelling goes down. Raising the legs above the level of the heart can assist to lessen the swelling. Gradually increasing gentle activity, such as walking, can improve circulation. Doctors may also you to wear elastic stockings to improve blood flow from the legs to reduce the swelling. Other treatments include wet dressing and administering topical antibiotics to control open ulcer infections. It is necessary to keep the skin clean.
