This sort of business can be easily done from home as they can work only once or twice a month per client, plus, their contact can be done through e-mail and telephone. In order to become small business bookkeepers, there will be some things you will need to have, most importantly the experience and the certification.

First of all, you will need to have the education to become a bookkeeper. A college or university degree is not necessary, but having one actually gives credibility to your business. Now, it is easy to complete courses online as college and universities are giving online options to complete their degrees. Some of the courses that you will need to take include payroll, journal entries, budget reporting, accounts receivable and payable, and using various accounting software. When writing your resume, including these abilities will gain you points with your clients.

After that, you should look for a job with a small firm, just to practice your skills in bookkeeping, while attaining the experience. When you have worked for at least two years, you will become eligible for the certification as a bookkeeper, which would need a minimum of two years working experience and a successful pass with a four parts national exam. This certification needs to be renewed every three years by continuing the education.

Then, you may choose the type of specialization in bookkeeping to indicate that you are good in completing specific tasks, letting clients know when they should keep you in mind you. One example would be the fiscal year bookkeeping. Do also decide on whether you would like to work with big or small corporations, or if you would like to work with both. Having a specific niche in specialization allows you to charge higher rates.

Charging the right rates is also important to catch the interests of clients. Do survey what other bookkeepers in the area are charging for their services. Bookkeepers generally charge between $20 and $50 per hour, but would charge more in certain specialized services. There are clients who prefer paying a flat rate for a month's work as well.

Last but not least, starting any businesses requires you to market your business well to attain customers. Invest in business cards and distribute them to people you meet. You can also joining your local Chamber of Commerce to expand your network. Of course, being motivated to work with numbers and look for clients is essential for small business bookkeepers to be successful.
