The first and most important thing is to have content on your site that is good. Good content will turn unique visitors into repeat visitors, and hopefully into customers. And by having good content, you can get both new customers and repeat customers.
The next step is to write articles and submit them. The main publishers are Ezines and GoArticles. The article directories like unique content so don't copy or plagiarize from somewhere else. Register, create a profile, read the guidelines and sned an article. The publisher, or article directory, is also a useful source for writing tips.
Make sure that your profile includes your website address.
If your article is published by anyone else, you have more potential traffic.
And each time you write an article with a link to your website appearing in the resource box, information about the author, it is a back-link to your site, something that helps you with your search engine ranking.
Over time, the backlinks add up and your search engine ranking will improve, again improving your traffic.
Another free method is to write a press release and submit it to press release directories.
Once you have some content on your site, and an article or two published on one of the directories, send an email to everyone in your contact list. Tell them about the site, what it does, what you want for it. Some people may suggest doing this first, but it is better to have something there that people will remember. Make a good first impression.
Go to google and find 2-3 forums that pertain to your site. Follow it and contribute when you can.
The last free method of this article is the social media. Twitter, facebook, and youtube are the top three that you can use to promote your site.
You can outsource any and all of these methods. And starting online with little money , may mean doing these things yourself. The advantage is that you learn a lot about your own business and then when you can, outsourcing will be easier and more effective.
Giving something of value through writing articles, press releases, forum posting and engaging in social media will establish your site as someplace that is worthwhile and the traffic will grow.
