Spring Lawn Preparation For 2011

Spring Lawn Preparation For 2011

Now that Spring is basically right around the corner and soon the colourful blooms will be back, it is time to think about Spring cleaning. Most think Spring cleaning is about washing those windows, scrubbing the walls, dusting corners inside the house, but you cannot forget to roll up those sleeves and give the outside some attention too.

Spending some quality time in the front or backyard once Spring rolls around can actually really pay off. For most people Winter can leave a lawn in a pretty rough patch..literally. But, there are actually tons of little things you can do to help spruce up your yard once the weather starts to turn warmer. By digging into cleanup in early spring, you will be for sure a head of the whole game and your neighbours will be playing the whole catch up all year long.

Below are seven tips that professionals use to ensure that they have a successful backyard spring cleanup and help your homes outside sparkle and shine as good as the inside.

Rake. As soon as your lawn begins to wake up from the season, try to give it a light rake, taking care to not disturb the new grass plants that are coming in. In addition to clearing all the leaves, twigs and other debris left over from last fall, the 1st raking of the year allows you to assess the extent of any winter damage. You can easily look for early signs of pests or disease and nip them in the bud before they even begin causing serious problems.

Aerate. Throughout the year heavy use can cause the soil in the ground to become compacted. Removing plugs of sod in the spring a.k.a. aerating..will loosen the soil and allows water, air and fertilizer to get down to the grass plant's root structure. For smaller yards you can purchase a manual aerating tool that removes plugs from the turf. If you have a large yard consider renting a power aerator.

Top dress. Once you have done the aerate, you should spend a few minutes top dressing..spreading a thin layer of peat moss over the lawn with a rake. This will help gradually condition the lawn throughout the year, strengthen the grass to resist disease, weeds and thatch, and also reduce the amount of water and fertilizer it actually needs.

Weed. Go after the weeds early as possible in the season before they even have a chance to go to seed. Having a healthy lawn is one of the simplest ways to crowd out weeds. Or you can remove dandelions and other broad-leaf weeds with an easy to use weeder. The Weed Hound has helped many people realize that weeding is too easy, I would recommend purchasing this tool.

Fix. Whether it is due to a disease or dog urine, bare patches can make your whole yard look shabby. A quick and easy way to improve the look of your lawn is to do lawn repair in the discoloured areas especially in early spring. Clear the dead looking patches, sprinkle grass seed and new soil, add fertilizer and keep the area moist until it sprouts.

Remove. Thatch prevents sunlight, oxygen and moisture from getting to the nutrient hungry soil. But it is actually easy to remove especially if you do it on a regular basis - every year or two. Go at the lawn with a dethatching rake or power dethatcher to clean away the layer of roots and stems. It takes a little elbow grease, but it will help clear the way for the new growth.

Tools. Spend a few minutes in your garage/shed to make sure your tools are still in a good working condition - before you use them for the first time of the year. Consider taking your lawn mower in for an annual tune-up. The dealer will replace the oil, spark plugs, sharpen the blade and get it ready for the season.

A little effort in the early spring can help you have a healthy looking yard and having your neighbours turning green with envy.
