South Devon Holidays In The English Riviera

South Devon Holidays In The English Riviera

You will find many great beaches in South Devon

, in fact there are 22 of them to choose from. Many have been awarded the Blue Flag, an award granted to those which maintain the highest water quality, environmental standards, education and information, beach safety and sanitary facilities. Some of these beaches include Broadsands beach, Meadfoot beach, Oddicombe beach, Breakwater beach, Paignton beach and Preston Sands. The quality awards dont stop here. Goodrington Sands, Ansteys Cove, Maidencombe beach and Torre Abbey Sands have all received quality coast awards too. Many of these South Devon beaches are to be found in a bay known as The English Riviera. Comprising the seaside towns of Babbacombe, Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, a holiday in South Devons English Riviera also offers plenty of family friendly world class attractions, places to eat and things to do.

Brixham is a famous fishing harbour town with a large commercial fish market and rich maritime history. Its full of character with plenty of places to eat and drink around the harbour area. In between Brixham and Paignton you will find the village of Churston. There is a golf course here and the steam railway has a station stop in Churston too, conveniently positioned next to The Weary Ploughman hotel and restaurant. From Churston you have close access to Broadsands beach and the south west coast path leading onto Elberry Cove, featured in Agatha Christies ABC Murders. Its a popular and pretty spot and worth a visit. The famous novelist Agatha Christies home Greenway is just a short distance from Churston. You will notice old fashioned 1940s buses ferrying visitors back and forth to Greenway. Parking at this attraction is strictly limited and in an effort to preserve the peace and tranquillity of the surrounding villages, the main access to this world-famous novelists home is by antique 1940s buses or by water taxi along the River Dart, disembarking on Agathas own private water jetty. Its a remarkably clever and environmentally green way to handle large crowds of visitors, and demonstrate the good old fashioned values of respect and neighbourliness that still exists in South Devon.

Paignton is a family friendly seaside town with a Victorian pier, large beach, crazy golf, multiplex cinema and world famous Paignton zoo, with tigers, lions, monkeys and over 3,000 other animals. As well as many seaside shops and eateries, the popular steam railway journey to Kingswear starts here in Paignton. If you catch the steam train to Kingswear, you will find a ferryboat directly outside the railway station. This takes you across the river to Dartmouth; a must do place to visit for quaint boutique shops, art galleries, bars, restaurants, a castle and access to the south west coast path.

Torquay is known as the Jewel in the Crown of the English Riviera. You will find easy access to the historic thatch village of Cockington, complete with manor house, blacksmith, tea rooms and thatched public house called The Drum. Cockington is a typical Chocolate Box thatched village, preserved in time and well worth the easy 2 mile walk from Torquays sea front. In Torquay there are many places to eat and a vibrant nightlife around the centre and harbour area at weekend. Expect a European caf-bar atmosphere in the summertime. Theres also a Michelin Star restaurant The Elephant in the harbour area and No7 Fish Restaurant close by together with many cafs, bars and tea rooms. The famous Pavilion next to the harbour now houses a small shopping arcade, however on the roof top discover a secluded bar and restaurant, The Reah Brothers, offering spectacular views across the entire bay in the summertime. This roof top restaurant and bar offers plenty of Al Fresco dining options on covered tables and chairs. At weekends, chilled live music can be found in many bars around the harbour area. Ferry boats operate from within the harbours of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham and run regularly every day between the seaside towns during the holiday season. Using the ferry makes for a novel and fun way to travel around the bay. The English Riviera in South Devon has much to offer visitors of all ages and interests. The Bay has UNESCO Global Geopark status and prehistoric caves can be explored in Kents Cavern in Torquay. Looking beyond the bay, Dartmoor National Park is within easy reach to explore, and Plymouth, home to one of Britains deepest aquariums, is just a short distance away by car or train. To conclude, South Devon has much to offer all age groups and the towns of Brixham, Churston, Paignton and Torquay provide many attractions and access points to explore beyond the bay.
