Son Bou is now a well established Menorca holiday resort dominated by both it's 2.5 k.m sandy beach, the longest on the island, and it's scenic natural setting on the south coast.
The resort is in reality a merge of three local areas: Sant Jaime , Son Bou and Torre Soli Nou but most guides and tour operators call this destination Son Bou. Torre Soli nou extends further inland if you are looking for a quieter location. Much of the resort sits terraced in delightful gardens on a hillside which offers spectacular coastal views.
Picturesque geography defines this resort. The beach stretches between two enclosing headlands east and west. Behind the beach is a protected nature reserve for water fowl. Behind the reserve a flat valley area where the main commercial centres are to be found along with low rise ( 2 storey ) commercial and private holiday apartments with pools and grounds. Behind the 'valley' begins the attractive flowered terraces along which villas nestle into the rising hillside. From the top ( reachable via the local resort train ) there are spectacular views over the resort, beach and along the coastline.
The resort accommodation options are a good mixture of villas, apartments and a handful of tour operator style hotels (which can also be booked directly.)
The beach at Son Bou offers surf strollers a long delightful barefoot walk, particularly westwards into the evening sunset. The beach has two beach bars, toilets parking and disabled access facilities. On the beach are water sports - Jet Skis, snorkelling, windsurfing, pedalos and is backed with sand dunes for little sunbathing 'hideaways'.
The commercial area has bars and restaurants with varying tastes and prices. As they are mostly located together it is best to stroll and take the pick of the ones that take your fancy.
Son Bou is just south of Alaior a genuine menorca town ( reachable by bus ) where you will find better window shopping , and gentile atmosphere in the narrow mazey cobbled streets of the old town as well as much better restaurants and food shopping.
Son Bou bowling offers american ten pin bowling and indoor children's play entertainments opening early evening and closing in the early hours. There are also beachside entertainments for the under 12s as well as extensive pools and play areas at Club Sant Jaime.
For those looking to escape the beach/pool you can wander along a coastal path through pines woods to Santo Tomas. Start at the western end of the beach. Just outside Torre Soli Nou is attractive country side with little counrty roads. And a fine pre-historic village site on the road to Alaior.
