The island is large enough to be interesting to explore, having a total area of some 100 square kilometers. Being mostly flat, it is easy to travel around by bicycle or by walking. Phillip Island has one of the biggest concentrations of koala bears in Australia. So prolific are these creatures that the island constantly exports koalas to be let loose into the wild throughout other parts of Australia. The headquarters for this activity is the Koala Conservation Centre located in the centre of the island.
