Ski Holidays, The Tourist Industry And The Volcano

Ski Holidays, The Tourist Industry And The Volcano

The unpronounceable Icelandic volcano has had far-reaching effects on industry worldwide

. Any business that relies on transporting goods or people by air travel has been severely affected and that, naturally, includes the tourism industry, which will be feeling the effects for a long time to come; particularly as last time the volcano erupted it continued to do so sporadically for 2 years or so.

Immediate effects

Of course weve all heard the stories of people stuck out in various countries, perhaps on group ski holidays with no way of getting back short of skiing all the way back to England (a feat that Im not sure anyone has attempted, surely its impossible) but it also puts a considerable hole in revenue for everyone involved in this. Think about all the hotels, restaurants, bars, ski instructors and ski hire shops that rely on new tourists to spend their hard earned cash in them. And not to mention the refunds! Tourists and skiers will surely feel entitled to a refund of anything theyve pre-booked and feel entitled to a deposit return as they had no opportunity to get there. At the same time, all these establishments have lost out on a lot of cash through no fault of their own and many subsist entirely on this business.

Tourist AgenciesSki Holidays, The Tourist Industry And The Volcano

Its not just local businesses that will feel the effects of the volcano. Ski holiday operators and other tourist agencies across the world will be faced with hordes of customers looking to get their money back from holidays they couldnt go on, and people may be more cautious in booking their group and family ski holidays for 2011 given the uncertainty of how long the volcano may continue erupting.

Radical Thoughts

There have been suggestions in the press that the way this volcano has managed to paralyse so much of human industry is another sign that mankind has got too big for its boots, that we depend too much on a globalized society and take for granted our dominion over the planet when we are still at its behest. That may be so, but thats not going to help the ski and tourism industry, and we might perhaps agree on some level, but Im sure none of us are going to give up our annual family ski holiday, and nor should we.

The Future

Whatever happens in the future, the tourism and ski industries are likely to feel the effects of this chaotic, unpredictable and unpronounceable volcano for a while yet, whether it continues to erupt or not, and as dedicated travellers and skiers, we should do our utmost to support local businesses that depend on tourist money, as well as our travel agencies and ski tour operators. And whilst the eruptions remain sporadic and unpredictable, theres no reason not to book our family ski holidays for later this year or 2011.
