Simple Craft Projects To Do With Your Child

If you are looking for inexpensive activities that are fun for both you and your child

, easy craft projects are hard to beat. Not only do most children enjoy making craft projects, but it is also a good way to foster their creativity. When choosing craft projects, it is important to match the difficulty of the project to the age and abilities of the child. It is okay for the craft to be just a little challenging, but it should not be so difficult that he or she will give up trying to complete the project. Of course, you should plan to assist your child with any parts of the project that would not be considered safe for their age level, such as a small child using sharp scissors. If your child will be completing the craft unassisted, be sure to choose something that they can succeed in making on their own. Here are some easy craft projects that you and your child will both enjoy.

Decorated Picture Frames

Almost everyone can use a few more picture frames because there is usually never a shortage of favorite pictures. They already come in a wide variety of styles, sizes and colors, but they can also be personalized and decorated as a craft project. Plain wood picture frames can be decorated with a wide variety of items, such as seashells, rocks or even small sticks. In most cases, all you will need are a few frames, a bottle of household adhesive, and your decorating items. If you have some chipboard letters, your child could even write their name on the frame. Allow your child to make a few to decorate their own room, or make several as gifts. Be sure to safely remove the glass from the frame before allowing your child to begin decorating.

Clay Sculptures

One of the great things about doing a sculpture is that there isn't a right or wrong way to do it. Sculpting is a great way to allow a child to fully explore their creativity, without spending a lot of money. Always cover your table with a vinyl tablecloth and wear protective clothing or an apron so you won't ruin anything. Then, give them a chunk of clay and watch the creative process begin. The best type of clay is self-hardening since it doesn't require a kiln for hardening. Once the sculpture is dry, it can be then be decorated with acrylic paints.

Paper "Mosaic" Art

Creating paper mosaic art is a craft that even small children can enjoy. It's also is a good way to use up small pieces of construction paper, gift wrap or even scrapbook paper. Start by cutting a variety of colored paper up into small irregular or geometrically shaped pieces. Then, give your child a piece of poster board and a bottle of school glue. For small children, a piece of self-adhesive contact paper glued face-side down to a piece of poster board so that the sticky side is up when the backing is removed also works well. Children can then create designs by sticking the paper shapes to the board. Once they're done with their creations, display them in some nice wall picture frames so that everyone can enjoy them.
