Signs, Signs, Nowhere Are Signs

Signs, Signs, Nowhere Are Signs

Traveling to a locale where there are few signs to help you find what you want can be a very frustrating experience

. Or maybe all the signs are in a language you dont understand.

This can be what happens when you come to the Big Island of Hawaii.

As a resident of this beautiful island, and a Certified Tour Guide for over 15 years, I get this question a lot. How come they (the State) dont have many signs? Why dont stores, restaurants and resorts put up big neon signs to help us find them? These are all good questions.

I have to agree that more signage would be helpful to the visitor, especially for places of interest. However, the State of Hawaii has passed sign ordinances, limiting the size and amount of signs that can be used, to preserve the natural beauty of the island.

Visitors perceive the logic, but it doesnt help them find sites any easier. Plus, when signs are available, they are in Hawaiian, which most visitors do not understand or pronounce well.

There are blog sites to help you, like the very popular, lovingthebigisland. Donald MacGowan, Phd. in Geology (aka Dr.Blizzardo), has tons of great, free content about hard to find Big Island hotspots and he really knows his stuff. Printing some of these blog posts and bringing them with you can be helpful.

But what if there was a friend to help you? Someone who knew the sites, shopping and restaurants? Someone who could give you real advice as to what to bring, what transportation options are available and even practical help with the language?

Thankfully, youre new friend awaits you. The easiest way to get around the Big Island is with a GPS-enabled travel app. These apps solve all those pesky problems and more. You can find them available through the iTunes store for iPhone and iPod Touch, as well as the Tour Guide Hawaii website.

Youll see more, learn more and maximize your vacation time with a travel app. Try it!

Touring the Big Island of Hawaii has never been so easy and so much fun.
