Shoulder Tendonitis Treatment - Do It Naturally

Shoulder tendons are the tough bands of tissue connecting muscle to the shoulder bone

. Tendonitis of the shoulder is a condition that usually results from repeated strain on the shoulder tendons and the subsequent inflammation. Such strain is commonly associated with some sports discipline where the shoulder is heavily involved such as swimming, baseball and tennis. Shoulder Tendonitis can also be the result of the degeneration of muscles and tendons due to age.

There are a number of symptoms that would point to tendonitis such as tenderness and unexplainable weakness around the shoulder tendon. You may also experience pain that may become worse at night especially if you lie on the tender shoulder. A snapping sensation when the shoulder is moved can be another sign of tendonitis. If not treated quickly, tendonitis can be a source of great discomfort. That said, there are various forms of treatment that you can consider using to alleviate this condition.

The first step is to take greater care of your shoulder. You might have to stop engaging in activities and movement that strain your shoulders. If for some reason you are not able to stop engaging in the activity immediately, try to wear a bandage that can protect the shoulder area and reduce the degree of swelling. There are times that just doing this is all you need to cure the shoulder.

Another self care remedy you can consider is placing ice on the problem area immediately you start to experience the discomfort. The ice will help reduce the pain and ease the inflammation around the injury. Take care though that the ice does not come into direct contact with the skin. You should only hold the ice above the tender area in intervals of twenty minutes or less. Leaving it longer would be counterproductive as it can worsen the problem. You may also take a rest.

Painkillers available over the counter such as ibuprofen, aspirin or naproxen would also come in handy. But you must be careful with such self medication as not to fall into pain killer dependency. If the pain persists, you need to consult a doctor. Once the doctor confirms that you are indeed suffering from tendonitis, he or she may take any one of several approaches.

For instance, a doctor may opt to treat the pain through corticosteroid treatment. This entails injecting a strong anti-inflammatory mixture straight into the affected tendon. A corticosteroid is a strong pain reliever that simultaneously curbs the spread of the inflammation. However, it does not address the underlying problem that brought about by the tendonitis in the first place. What's more the corticosteroid treatment must be done carefully since the injection can lead to even weaker tendons and in the worst case, a full tendon rupture.

A doctor may recommend physical therapy once the pain has been brought under control. The physiotherapist develops a special program targeting the injured tendon that will help increase the strength and flexibility of the shoulder. If the injury to the tendons is severe and no other remedies can work, then the doctor will resort to surgery.
