Should You Consider Getting A Cna Certification Online

Choosing to get your CNA Certification online has some pros and cons

. A CNA is a certified nursing assistant, very similar to the nurse's aides of years ago. These helpers performed tasks that were halfway between medical and housekeeping chores, and worked with a few nurses each shift to perform duties that nurses had no time or interest in performing.

A CNA replaces the old fashioned Nurses Aides from years ago. Nurses Aides took care of tasks that nurses didn't have time for and sometimes just didn't want to do. Changing beds and handing out bedpans were typical chores that were handed off the aides. It didn't take a lot of training, and most of the training was done on the job once you were hired.

As laws changed in many states and medical rules and regulations tightened up along with patient privacy laws, nurses aides were phased out and certified CNAs took their place. The instruction program could last anywhere from six to 40 weeks depending on where you went. Colleges and high schools usually offered the program as either part of their regular education or as perhaps adult evening classes.

There are two vital parts of this type of curriculum. One is classroom study where you learn theory, and the other is literally on the job training where you get hands on practical experience working in a medical setting, usually a hospital or nursing home.

And this is the major problem with any of the online CNA training programs. You don't get the hands on experience you need to really know your job. Some of the large educational facilities have managed to provide a type of web based learning where students would be required to attend scheduled classes and events using various online programs and web cams

You can interact with the class and even practice things like dressings, but other important tasks like making a bed or moving IV poles will be all but impossible to practice without having access to these things in your own home.

The problem here is that if you choose to study for your certification online, you miss this level of practice and participation. Some of the large college programs do have a web based instruction phase that uses various online programs, sites and even web cams so that you can interact with and participate with your instructor in a pseudo class setting. In some cases this might be effective as a learning tool, but there are many aspects of a CNA's job that simply can't be learned or perfected online. You need some sort of classroom practice and interaction.

Job hunting also needs to be considered. You might pass your finals with straight A's, and you might pass your test exam with no problem the first time around, but without the level of practice that most reputable hospitals demand, you might find it difficult to graduate from a purely online program and land a great job.
