The layout of a shopping mall commonly consists of multiple department stores, a food court, and multiple other stores that are considerably smaller in size. The department stores are the larger, more popular stores, and are responsible for attracting most customers. In the design of the mall, they are known as the anchor stores, and are placed as far apart as possible. The reason for this specific placement is to generate more traffic through the food court and smaller stores while traveling from one department store to another. More traffic means more business!

A shopping mall can also be more than just a place to purchase things. They are often popular hangouts for younger people, who tend to visit in groups.
