Shopping For Art At An Art Festival by:John Eimerman Milwaukee

There's no better feeling than walking through an art festival with some money in your pocket

. The possibilities seem endless, and sometimes actually ARE endless! So when browsing the wares at a festival, what should you remember to make the most of your experience? John Eimerman, founder of the Naples International Art Festival shares some of his secrets below.

Number One. Be mindful of your space. You can't go buying a piece of blown glass that's 3 feet tall and expect it to fit into your 18 inch curio cabinet. Remember dimensions, and try to imagine what the piece will look like once it's installed.

It can also be helpful to have somewhat of a pre-planned idea of what you'd like to go into a space. It doesn't have to be detailed. Maybe you want something boxy and modern, or smooth and sensuous. Don't be too specific in your formation of idea heading to the festival, because remember: you're shopping for ART; however, having an idea in mind can help you weed through some of the clutter that can be at an art festival.

Number Two. If your room is beige and you want something to pop out, try to steer clear of white, brown, tan, beige items. You see what I'm saying. Go to the booths that pop out at you, and you'll be almost guaranteed an item that will pop out once at home, or office. And speaking of the office.

Remember that an office piece should be neutral. This doesn't mean boring, but it does mean that it should steer clear of sending any political or controversial messages, unless your actual office is itself political or controversial! But when shopping for a lobby or outer office art form, try to keep it abstract. This will give customers or clients something to look at or ponder if there is a wait.

Number Three. Determine a shopping budget. If you have only $50 to spend there's really no reason to walk into a booth showcasing $3,000 sculptures. If you're looking for a photograph or painting, and you know a range you're willing to spend, you can cut down on all the different temptations that no doubt line the walk ways of the art festival.

Number Four. Have fun! Be creative in your thinking! If you stick to a pre-determined budget, there's really no right or wrong answer. You will always come away with a one-of-a-kind conversation piece.

Shopping for art at an art festival is a learning process but one that's fun and rewarding. Stay true to yourself and keep the above tips in mindand happy shopping!
