Shape Up This Summer!

Now Summers here, we'd all love to have a great beach body, so if you think you are in need f losing a few extra pounds, ditch the chocolate and read on.

Few people think junk food is good for them. Most people are aware of the five a day guideline for fruit and veg and the eight glasses of water a day mantra. We know we should be eating less and exercising more. Few people given the choice would choose to be fat, and yet...

In Britain today, nearly two thirds of men and over half of all women are overweight. One in five Britains is obese (more than two stone overweight), and there is growing concern about children. With this extra weight come extra health risks such as heart disease, diabeties, back pain and breathlessness. So we know we need to lose weight but how?

As millions of us can testify who have been on a diet and failed, or lost pounds only to put them back on again, losing weight is hard. But the equation is simple: to lose weight you need to burn more calories than you take in.

Experts from the British Dietic Association and the medical profession advocate lifestyle change as the only way to lose weight and keep weight off. This is because unless you permanently change your eating habits the weight you lose will creep back on.

Permanent changes don't mean never eating chocolate, sweets or fast food again, but it does mean limiting these foods to occasional treats. You may need to switch to skimmed or semi skimmed milk for good, and keep things like sweets and fizzy drinks to a minimum.

If this sounds disheartening it shouldn't. There is room in a healthy diet for all these foods in moderation. As a rule of thumb, a healthy diet will:-

Include a variety of foods, with plenty of grain, fruit and vegatables

Be based on regular meals and snacks, starting with breakfast

Lower your fat, sugar and salt intake

Moderate levels of alcohol and fizzy drinks, which are high in calories and/or sugar

Aim for steady weight loss of 1-2lb per week.
