Shanghai Metro - Connecting Chinas Urban Communities

Chinas largest city Shanghai is a hive of activity

, and what keeps the buzz alive is its Metro system. The metro known among locals as the Shanghai Rail Transit, uses both railway lines as well as the subway to get people to where they want to go.

When the metro opened in 1995 it made Shanghai the third city in China to have a subway. Prior to Shanghai, the technology for subways was confined to Tianjin and Beijing. Since its beginning the metro sysytem has put Shanghai on the map and today it boasts of over seven metro lines, and a hundred odd stations. The tracks laid out for the Metro have been stretched across over 200km, this is the longest network and even longer than the Hong Kong metro.

Last year in December a record number of over 4 million people were counted as those who rode the metro daily. For tourists to the city the Shanghai Metro is a great way to get about the city. It is said the Metro will add on new routes and by 2020 it is expected that 20 new routes will be added to the system.

The need for the Shanghia Metro arose largely due to the fact that the population in Chinas mega metropolis was growing and continues to do so. The increase in traffic congestion on the roads created an issue so much so that the public transportation system was expected to be over whelmed by the 80s.Shanghai Metro - Connecting Chinas Urban Communities

After six long years of preparartion work and construction the first line was opened in 1995 to much enthusiasm. The first line that was opened connected the south and the north district in the city.

The future of the Shanghai Metro looks bigger and better with the Shanghai Metro Corporation undertaking work to expand the existing network to exceed 300km; these plans are to be sustained with the aid of several light rail routes. The project is expected to be completed by 2025.

Tourists could take the metro to get into the heart of the city and whats more check into a Shanghai hotel such as the Millennium Hongqiao Hotel Shanghai, for some warm hospitality, impeccable service and amenities. This Shanghai China hotel is close to the Shanghai International Trade Centre and is only 10 minutes away from the airport.
