Being the southernmost leg of the Highway 1, it belongs to the modern wonders of the world. It was originally a railway but had to close because of too many damages brought by 1935 hurricane. In late 1930s, the construction of the highway was started to compensate the loss of a railway. Today, Overseas Highway connects Miami to the southernmost point of the continental US.

The cables along the bridge resemble an inverted fan and are colored yellow to give honor to the Sunshine State.
