Seoul Airport Tours to Yonggungsa Temple

It is no surprise to those that have stepped foot inside Seoul Incheon International Airport that it is an award winning location. With internet services, luxury lunges, spa services, museums and even a golf course, Seoul Incheon International Airport knows how to service its guests. That said, there is one service that the airport offers that goes relatively unknown. While many guests traveling through Seoul will be delighted to see signs pointing the way to the airport's South Korean cultural centers, few will have seen pamphlets on mini tours that the airport offers to some of the main tourist attractions in the Seoul area.

One such place is the Yonggungsa Temple. This gorgeous piece of South Korean heritage is absolutely stunning to see in person. Though photographs look as they have been ripped from the pages of ancient fairytales, they hardly do this piece of religious mastery justice. The temple is actually located in the Northeast region of Busan, which is some distance from the city of Seoul. If you have any questions about the distance and the necessary time needed to make the trip, do no hesitate to ask the airport tour operator that is booking your journey. The tour operator will most likely ask to see your travel itinerary and help you make appropriate arrangements. The convenience of booking the tour through the Seoul Incheon International Airport means that you will direct transport to the location in question and most likely be back in plenty of time to make your flight. You may also find that unique travel arrangements can be made to alter flight times if you are flying with one of the country's national airlines such as Korean or Asiana Airlines.

Like many of the temples in South Korea, Yonggungsa Temple is located in the mountains and has the usual 108 steps leading up to and back down the temple's peak. The temple was actually partially reconstructed in the very early 1970's as part of a national effort to improve and strengthen the country's national identity. Buddhism is a still the major religion in South Korea, though Christianity is pretty widespread throughout the country. Whatever your religion or spiritual beliefs, the temple is a stunning sight that all will enjoy. Stunning stone and brick pagodas jut out of the rocky cliff and beautifully hinder the view of the surrounding sea. Rows of nearly identical stone statues line the walkway where you will see true South Korean Buddhists paying respect to the symbolic creatures.

A far away view of the massive temple grounds reveals the many-tiered levels of temple rooms and spaces. Imagine the call for meditation that could be heard echoing in the shallow bay to the people below in the valley. Inside, colorful paper flowers hang from the ceilings with strips of scripture to inspire and awe. Flower shaped enclaves decorate walls and doors that are only revealed at a close distance. A jolly golden Buddha greets guests and sends them home with prayers for luck and good karma. You will see local Buddhists with candles and incense sticks bowing to the ground in honor of their beliefs hoping their visit will bring joy and good luck to friends and family. The stark dragon that lines the stairway is meant to scare off bad spirits. While most temple dragons remain rather flat along the wall with only a decorated head, this one is built like twisting roller coaster. Very impressive to say the least, your visit to the temple is well worth the time and a much more enjoyable experience than simply waiting indoors at the airport. If you return with enough time on the clock, be sure to head to one of the many hotels in Seoul Airport for a quick nap or freshen up session before catching your long awaited flight.
