The cheapest of all food in Egypt is locally grown fruit. You can purchase fruit from fruit stalls in the marketplaces. Be sure to go to the marketplaces that cater to a mostly local crowd and will get better deals. The mangos, guavas and melons are delicious and healthy. Also, try grabbing a meal at a fish market. Many of the fish markets have fish and seafood restaurants inside that are great places to get an inexpensive and fresh seafood meal. You may have to share your table but the food is delicious. These three budget meals will save you some money.
Aside form food there is another way to stretch your budget further. It is important that you drink bottled water in Egypt but you can save a lot of money by purchasing locally bottled water instead of brands that you recognize. The brands that are less expensive and safe to drink are Siwa and Heyaf. Just be sure to use common scene and check the bottles for tampering when you buy them. Sometimes Egyptians refill empty water bottles and try to resell them. This should not be a problem if you are careful.
When you are traveling as a family on a budget there are always a few things that you may have to compromise to get an affordable price. Obviously if you are worried about price you will not be staying beach front in Alexandria or in an all inclusive resort in Hurghada but that doesn't mean that you can not enjoy the beaches in Egypt. Drinking is both taboo and expensive so you and your family may want to forgo this extra expense while in Egypt this winter. These little compromises can save you money while still allowing you to enjoy yourselves.
