There are a series of behaviors and characteristics displayed when an animal approaches death, some of which include a failing sense of smell, taste, and hearing. In most cases, the pet will have begun slowing his or her eating weeks before the actual death, and this should be viewed as a natural part of the death process.
As an animal reaches into the ladder stages of life, and into the initial stage of the dying process, basically two disparate changes are at work, and these changes are best understood as both inter-dependent as well as inter-related. Another equally important change at work has to do with a the emotional or spiritual plane, in which the animal may let out small whimpers and howls, and these should be seen as subtle requests to move oninto the next phasedeath. Basically, the sounds that arise from the animal are not necessarily related to pain, more than likely they are releases of energy, built up pockets in the body of stored energy.
The following list is a short compilation of some of the symptoms that the pet displays when nearing the end of his or her life: coolness of the feet, paws, tail, and additional areas; the skin may change color, perhaps darker in various places, this is simply an indication of decreasing blood circulation, so that other organs are given enough blood for proper functioning.
Sleeping and disorientation are also normal as the pet approaches death, i.e., simply more time sleeping and difficult to awake; this is due to the metabolism attempting stasis. In addition, the pet may become nervous and agitated for seemingly no reason, so it is best to speak softly to the pet when approaching in these situations. Incontinence is also relatively normal, for the muscles in that area are losing their appropriate functionality, a plastic liner under the bed is a good way to deal with incontinence in pets.
Congestion, restlessness, and breathing changes are also something to look out for, this may mean gurgling sounds and the inability for the pet to cough productively. When an animal is restless in these circumstances, it may be best to let him or her wander, perhaps playing soft music and gently petting the animal will lessen the anxiety. Moreover, breathing may appear shallow and panting may occur, this is quite normal, as the body is dealing with less circulation in many of the organs. Changing his or her position will often help in these instances.
Lastly, many animals begin to have what appear to be visionary experiences, and the pet may be focusing on arguably other energies, but many will find that point unfounded scientifically. The best thing do when your pet is approaching the transition to death is to comfort him or her in any way possible, as death in an animate world is a natural process, and should be dealt with in a peaceful way.
