Seeing A Sedation Dentist: What To Expect

For many people, going to a sedation dentist is the only way they can possibly bear the experience

. Fear of dentistry is a surprisingly common phobia. For the most part, it's not that people are actually afraid of the dental chair (the way, say, some people are afraid of clowns), but it fills them with a tremendous amount of anxiety. So much so that it can bring on panic attacks in those prone to them. Going a long time in between dental visits isn't a good idea, so professionals in the industry knew they had to come up with something to get those fearful patients back into the office. What they came up with has helped thousands of people overcome their phobia and get the dental care they need.

So what is it, exactly, that a sedation dentist provides? Since nearly 30 percent of the population suffers from some degree of anxiety or fear when it comes to dentistry, the main goal was to come up with a way to keep patients calm and relaxed during their visits. This is done through the use of sedatives. These sedatives can be administered in several ways and can take several forms. Tranquilizers, anti-anxiety pills, depressants, and nitrous oxide are some of the tools being used in dental offices around the country. While IV administration was a common tool years ago, most dental offices today rely on oral administration.

There are some misconceptions about the experience. Many people believe they will sleep through a trip to the sedation dentist. This is rarely the case. For safety reasons, most dental offices will only put the patient in a state of deep relaxation, allowing them to keep at least some consciousness throughout the appointment. Not only is this safer, but it allows the doctor and hygienists to ask questions of the patient if necessary. At the same time, the drugs are typically powerful enough that the patient will have little memory of the visit-almost as if it took place in a dream. This can be extremely comforting for those who would rather not dwell on their experience in the dreaded chair.

A sedation dentist can offer a lot even to patients who experience very little anxiety about going in for an appointment. Some dental procedures can take a very long time. This can be a test of endurance for a patient, even if they have no other qualms about being in the chair. Sedatives can make a matter of hours seem like a matter of minutes, however, which can enable the doctor to get more work done in a single appointment and put less stress on the patient.
