Sedation Dentistry: Conquering Your Fears For Anxiety-free Dental Care

Being afraid of dental work is normal, but if your fear is so bad that you have a

difficult time allowing the dentistry professional to do what he needs to do, then you may be interested in sedation dentistry. Sedation is something that will help you relax, allow you to feel calm and peaceful, and give the dentist more opportunity to help you while you are there. When you are calm and peaceful, he will be able to work with less interruption and more confidence that you are alright and not as scared as you were before.

Sedation is usually achieved by using medication of some sort. Some of the most common forms of medications to use are tranquillizers, depressants, anti-anxiety medications, and nitrous oxide. Your dentist may prescribe something for you to take before you come to your appointment, or he may administer something intravenously.

When you think of sedation dentistry, you may think it means you are completely knocked out. That is usually not the case. Sedatives may be used in a dose that will calm you, make you less likely to feel afraid, and yet allow you to be awake during the process of your dental work. Being sedated when you visit the dentist can benefit both you and the dental professional. You will be able to take care of the things you need to, without the fear that may hinder you without sedation. Your dentist will be able to get his work done, and in a better timeframe than he would if you were not sedated.

When you use sedation dentistry, you may still need to have anesthesia for many procedures. The medication to sedate you may make you feel less pain, or care less about pain, but there may still be some pain without the local anesthetic.

It is common for people who choose sedation dentistry to feel like their appointment only took a few minutes, when it fact it could have taken a lot longer. Sedation dentistry is used by many dentistry professionals, and can be an option to quell fears when having both normal visits and extensive dental work done.
