. The medicine is injected to shrink the blood vessels. In adults, this treatment is used for varicose veins and hemorrhoids. In children and young adults, it is used with vascular or lymphatic malformations. Sclerotherapy is an option to treat varicose veins, other than surgery and laser ablation. In this procedure a variety of sclerotherapy solutions (sclerosants) are injected directly into the varicose veins. Feeder veins are larger, but slightly deeper located superficial veins that feed surface spider vein networks, whereas reflux vein disease refers an abnormal communication with the deep vein system allowing reverse flow from the deep vein system into superficial veins.
Spider veins typically respond quickly to sclerotherapy treatments and the results can be seen as early as three to six weeks, depending on the vein size and density. Larger veins or clusters of smaller veins take longer, i.e. they respond in three to four months. The side effects of sclerotherapy are tolerable and temporary. Patient might experience itching, tenderness, skin bruising and redness at the injected area.
