Schengen Visa Information for Taiwanese

On his last visit to Taiwan Simon Busuttill, the spokesman for the European Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs indicated that Taiwan is likely to be granted visa-waiver status in the Schengen area.

Simon Busuttil, which is responsible for the visa issue, made the remarks before wrapping up his five-day visit to Taiwan in May 2010.

As of January 11, 2011 the new policy comes into affect and holders of Taiwan the "Republic of China" passports can travel for short-term stays to the Schengen-area without a visa. This is on conditions that the valid passport includes a valid personal ID-Number and the maximum period is for 90 days within 6 months without taking on employment, residence or long term studies.

Taiwan joins Japan, Malaysia, and South Korea that can already travel for short-term stays to the Schengen-area without a visa.

Stays over 90 days within 6 months, for the purpose of taking employment or residence, etc. are subject to the normal Schengen visa obligations

For Nationals who do not require a visa, it is highly recommended that they purchase a travel medical insurance for the duration of their stay, even if they are insured abroad under their statutory health insurance system.

The Schengen-area in 2010 consists of 25 countries including the following:

Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark ,Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
