Saving Money with Your Heat Pump in Summer

Heat Pumps and Air Conditioning units can keep you toasty warm in winter and cool in summer, but if you're not careful, they can add a nasty surprise to your power bill.

Even though a heat pump is much more energy efficient than conventional heating methods, the more effectively you use your heat pump, the more money you will save. Follow these tips to keep your home cool and your power bill low this summer:

First of all, remember that not all heat pumps are created equal. In New Zealand, the most energy efficient heat pumps are awarded the Energy Star. Look for this Energy Star when buying your heat pump.

Buy the right size. Certain heat pump units work better in specific rooms or home sizes. Buying a unit that is too large means you'll spend more than you need to, and buying a unit that's too small means it will have to work harder to heat your home. Not only does this use more power, it puts pressure on the unit and causes it to break down more.

Ask your heat pump professional for the best unit for your home.

Have your heat pump installed by a professional. That way you can be certain it's working correctly.

Use the Fan: most heat pumps have a fan-only setting, which you can use in sumer to quickly cool a room and create cross drafts. While using the fan setting, open doors and windows to circulate fresh, cool air.

Use the dehumidifier: Often, it's the humidity, and not the heat, that makes New Zealand summers unbearable. Using only the dehumidifier can save on your power bill while sucking the moisture from the air.

Avoid Auto settings: On auto, a heat pump might actually start heating a room in the dead of summer if it drops below a certain temperature. To prevent your unit working constantly, turn off auto settings and keep it switched off when not in use.

Service your heat pump. With regular servicing by a professional, your heat pump will continue to efficiently heat and cool your home for years to come.
