On Monday, Friday and the weekend the airport is packed with people coming and going. This is why the tickets are more expensive. So in the middle of the week you will have better chances of finding tickets at a better price.
Renting car when you have reached your destination is not always the best solution. You can instead buy a bus pass. Usually all the buses travel from remote parts of the city to the most visited tourist attractions. So you will be able to reach all the places you want to see.
