Sanya, the Hawaii of China? by:Wendy Xu

There is a misconception that Sanya (http://www.chinatouronline.com/china-travel/sanya.html)

is the Hawaii of China, with natural powdery sand and affable natives living in beach huts and dancing their days away. Although the scene in Sanya is far from that, it is still a pretty quaint place, especially when you see nothing but the sea beyond. Located at the southern end of Hainan Island, near the high-end Ya Long Bay, Sanya is a major tourist spot.

Walk along Jie Fang Road, (noting that almost every city in China has a road of that name) you enjoy the scenery as you head eastwards towards Ya Long Bay. Along this main road, you find many amenities such as banks, supermarkets, ticketing stalls, bus stations and even the occasional hotel.

Ya Long Bay and the sheltered Da Dong Hai Bay, located further north, are considered the better beaches, as they offer sea sporting activities such as jetskiing, banana boating, snorkeling, diving and parasailing.

For food, head to Sheng Li Road for a decent place to chill, or to a fresh seafood restaurant facing the beach near Phoenix Island, it is an island after all. For more options, Da Dong Hai Bay offers temptation in the form of a seemingly unending row of eateries along the beach. Of course, when there's seafood, there's beer, and the gamut of nocturnal entertainment outlets ranges from outdoor bars to karaoke lounges and a cinema complex.

Sanya is well-linked via roads and air routes to many parts of China and beyond. Long-distance buses to Haikou, the gateway to Guangzhou, can be found at the bus station. International and budget airlines cover many countries, such as Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand, as well as link domestic destinations such as Beijing (http://www.chinatouronline.com/china-travel/beijing.html).
